Privacy
Privacy.
Mātai Chambers is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how personal information is collected, used, stored, and disclosed through this website and in the course of professional engagements. We comply with the Privacy Act 2020 and the Information Privacy Principles.
Who we are
Mātai Chambers is a chambers of independent barristers at Cathedral House, Level 3, 48 Wyndham Street, Auckland 1010. Each barrister practises independently and is separately responsible for personal information held in connection with their own practice. Information held by a barrister about a client matter is also subject to that barrister's professional obligations and any terms of engagement.
What we collect
We collect personal information you give us when you telephone or email chambers or one of our barristers, including your name, contact details, and anything you choose to tell us, and information you provide in the course of an engagement.
Please do not send confidential details of a legal matter by email before speaking with a barrister. Confidentiality and legal professional privilege attach once a privileged relationship is in place.
How we use it
We use personal information to respond to your enquiry, to check for conflicts before an engagement, to provide legal services and meet our professional obligations, and to keep the records required by the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 and the Rules of Conduct and Client Care for Lawyers.
Disclosure
We do not sell or trade personal information. We disclose it only with your consent, to professionals you authorise us to work with, such as instructing solicitors or experts, where required or permitted by law, and to service providers who help us operate, under obligations of confidence.
Storage and security
Personal information is held electronically and, where applicable, in physical files. We take reasonable steps to protect it against loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure. This website uses HTTPS encryption. Where a service provider stores data outside New Zealand, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is subject to comparable privacy protections.
Retention
Client records are kept for at least seven years after a matter ends, as the professional rules require, and are then securely destroyed unless the law requires them to be kept longer.
Cookies
This website does not use advertising trackers. It uses no cookies of its own beyond what your browser needs to display it.
Access and correction
You may ask for access to, and correction of, personal information we hold about you. Please direct the request to the barrister instructed on your matter, or to chambers. We will respond within 20 working days, and there is no charge for a reasonable request.
Complaints
If you are concerned about how your personal information has been handled, please raise it first with the barrister concerned. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz or on 0800 803 909.
