Holly Alderton
Holly Alderton is a criminal defence barrister who brings a distinctive client-focused approach to criminal litigation. Holly represents clients across a range of criminal matters, with particular expertise in discharge without conviction applications, drink driving procedures, and diversion negotiations. Her practice is built on clear communication and guiding clients through what can be an overwhelming process.
Background and Credentials
Holly holds a Bachelor of Laws from Auckland University of Technology (2017) and was admitted to the Bar the same year. Before entering legal practice, Holly spent 27 years as an Air New Zealand flight attendant (1990-2017), developing exceptional client service skills through extensive international travel and high-pressure situations. During her studies, she worked with Air New Zealand's legal commercial team (2012) and previously practised employment law with the Flight Attendants Association (2000-2006). This diverse background informs her practical, client-centred approach to criminal defence.
Experience
Following admission, Holly practised with the Public Defence Service from 2019 to 2022, developing an intimate knowledge of the courts and court staff through a high-volume practice. She commenced private practice as a barrister in 2022 and joined Mātai Chambers in 2023. Holly holds PAL 1-2 legal aid provider approvals and accepts instructions across criminal matters in the District Court. Her real strength lies in helping clients understand and navigate the criminal justice system, drawing on both her legal expertise and decades of experience in client-facing roles.
Instructions
Holly accepts both legal aid and private instructions for all District and High Court criminal matters, with particular expertise in discharge without conviction applications, drink driving cases, and diversion negotiations. Her approach combines legal precision with genuine care for clients facing criminal charges. Instructing solicitors are welcome to contact chambers directly.
